Lemon Tree is the perfect name for this variety. It has nice, large (approx. 6 cm) clear yellow fruit, which corresponds to that of a lemon or lime in both colour and form. The fruit is solid, just like a pasta tomato and is therefore also ideal to use as a preserve in ketchup, or as juice or sauce. The large growing plants produce an enormous quantity of fruit with a light and pleasant taste within 80 days of seeding. It's a particularly good cooking tomato.

an Marzano tomatoes are the most famous plum tomato to come out of Italy. They are grown in the rich volcanic soil at the base of Mount Vesuvius, which gives them a sweet flavor and low acidity and they are coveted for their firm pulp, deep red color, easy to remove skin and low seed count. In fact while regular round tomatoes usually have four or five locules or seed pockets, plum tomatoes like those from San Marzano have only two.

he fruit eventually reaches about 2 pounds (yes, that's POUNDS), but when young it is striped like an upside-down traffic signal -- green shoulders, yellow belly, and red underside and blossom scar. As it matures, the green disappears and the red flushes upward through the yellow, until the ripened tomato is a rich gold with heavy red striping.
